PROJECT: Asia and the Pacific Regional Geodetic Project 1997 (APRGP97)

Mandate: Resolution 7(b) of the 2nd meeting of the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific, 30 September 1996, endorsed the joint cooperative APRGP97 as proposed by Working Group 3, Regional Geodetic Networks Working Group (GNWG). This resolution was subsequently endorsed by the 14^th UN Regional Cartographic Conference for Asia and the Pacific, February 1997.

Outcomes:

Creation of a fundamental geodetic data set.
Creation of a set of fundamental position values in an ITRF reference frame at a specified epoch for the precise regional geodetic sites having permanent observing geodetic instrumentation.
Results from a combined analysis of all geodetic data for presentation at a Permanent Committee meeting to facilitate technology transfer.

Description:

A campaign of simultaneous observations at GPS, SLR, VLBI, DORIS, and PRARE permanent geodetic observation sites during October 1997.
Collate all the observed data - by AUSLIG.
Distribution of data set to participating national agencies for independent processing and analysis.
Comparison of results and analysis from processing of individual geodetic techniques by participating national agencies.
Combined solutions of all geodetic techniques to determine final position values as a regional precise geodetic reference network.
Final results to be published in the proceedings of a mid 1988 geodesy workshop to be held in Canberra, Australia.

Purpose:

To establish a geodetic framework for the future integration of national geodetic datums in the region.
To provide a base on which to build a homogeneous Spatial Data Infrastructure for the Asia and the Pacific region.
To provide a framework for future integration of permanent geodetic stations being established by national agencies in their own time frame.
To assess the existing capabilities for space geodetic data processing and analysis (GPS, SLR, DORIS, PRARE, VLBI) in the region for appropriate expansion and/or improvement.

1 Second GNWG circular advising national agencies of plan for October 1997 geodetic observation campaign (GPS, SLR, DORIS, PRARE, VLBI), and in particular the 1 week GPS observation campaign commencing 0 hours UTC 12 October 1997 (GPS week 927) and the VLBI observation periods. 15 August 1997

2 Distribute GPS observation standards to national agencies with second circular. 15 August 1997

3 Notification to WPLTN, GFZ, CNES and APT of plan for October 1997 geodetic observation campaign. 15 August 1997

4 Request to CNES and GFZ for permission for participating national agencies to process DORIS and PRARE data. August1997

5 Confirmation with Shanghai Observatory on progress to collate the VLBI data. August 1997

6 Confirmation with NASA/GSDC on preparation for correlating the VLBI data. August 1997

7 Establish the number and distribution of permanent GPS sites by country and location in the region. September 1997

8 Establish the number and distribution of participating SLR sites in the region. September 1997

9 SLR, DORIS and PRARE observation campaign under the respective coordination of WPTLN, CNES and GFZ. 1 Oct to 31 Oct 1997

15 VLBI data to be forwarded from Shanghai Observatory to Goddard Space Flight Centre. November 1997

16 Distribution of geodetic data sets and data processing standards to national agencies. November 1997

17 Initial correlation of VLBI data by NASA/ Goddard Space Flight Centre (maximum of 6 sites). December 1997

18 Initial processing of PRARE data by GFZ. January 1998

19 Initial processing of DORIS data by CNES. January 1998

20 Individual technique processing and analysis of specific data sets by participating national agencies. January 1998

21 Individual technique processing and analysis of GPS, SLR, DORIS and PRARE by AUSLIG. January 1998
