November 1998 Geodetic Observation Campaign (APRGP98)
The 4th meeting of the PCGIAP held in Iran, in March 1998 adopted a resolution encouraging member countries to participate in the 1998 regional geodetic campaign. This campaign will aid in strengthening the precise regional geodetic network, assist in the establishment of a regional datum, and in monitoring the tectonic motion of the network sites.
Each member country of the Permanent Committee on GIS Infrastructure for Asia and the Pacific is invited to participate in the APRGP98 campaign, in the supply of geodetic data from continuous tracking sites and by undertaking analysis of the composite data sets. GPS observations should include APRGP97 sites and additional sites that may assist with extending and densifying the regional network. Observations from other geodetic techniques SLR, VLBI, DORIS and GLONASS are also sought.
At the APRGP97 Regional Geodetic Network Workshop held in Canberra in July 1998, participants proposed that the APRGP98 campaign be undertaken to coincide with the 1998 GEODYSSEA project campaign (19th – 24th November) with sharing of GPS data from some key geodetic sites. The APRGP98 GPS observation campaign will commence at 0 hours on 19 November and finish at 0 hours on 29 November providing a data set fully spanning the GEODYSSEA campaign period and GPS week 985.
Members are encouraged to take this opportunity to also observe GPS at key national geodetic network sites to assist with the transformation of spatial data into the regional datum. Where key sites can not be occupied during the APRGP98, GPS observations on local geodetic networks prior to or after the APRGP98 campaign would be an option.
Please advise if assistance or expertise is required to enable participation in the APRGP98 campaign. To finalise the project a results workshop is planned for mid 1999, possibly in Vietnam.
To facilitate coordination of this geodetic project, please nominate the officer in your agency to whom future correspondence on geodetic matters should be sent.
