A joint workshop of PCGIAP WG1 and WG2 was held from September 7 to September 8, 2004 in Chengdu, China. The main objectives of this workshop are 1) to address the status of geodetic datums and availability in all countries for fundamental data and the potential use of regional data nodes as access points for geodetic data; 2) to discuss the possible establishment of a PCGIAP portal and a pan AP framework data set. About 54 people from 10 countries and regions participated this workshop, including Australia (2), India (4), Indonesia (5), Iran(1), Japan (5), Malaysia (1), South Korea (3), Vietnam (2), USA (1), China (20), Hongkong-China (1).

Dr. Cheng Pengfei, Chair of the PCGIAP WG 1 introduced the agenda of the workshop at the end of the opening session.
The morning plenary session was chaired by Prof. Yang Kai, former PCGIAP president and now president of Chinese Society of Geodesy, Photogrametry and Cartography. Among the seven presentations, five reported the progress of PCGIAP WG1, WG2 and WG3:
1) Mr. John Manning, Vice Chair of WG1, reported the progress of Geodetic Network in Asia and the Pacific Region achieved by WG1, which reviewed the performed and on going projects. Prof. Cheng Pengfei, chair of WG1, give a brief introduction on Chinese geodetic history (mainly focused on all datums) and achievements made in recent years.
2) Two progress reports of WG2 were presented. Dr. ZHOU Xu, coordinator of the task force on APSDI data node, introduced the revised Guideline on APSDI Clearinghouse Node Development. Dr. JIANG Jie, Nationalgeomatics Center of China ( NGCC) presented the draft Technical Content specification of Pan-Asia Pacific framework dataset, which was prepared by Mrs. Ji Xiaoyan from NGCC.
3) The activities of WG3 and the WG3 workshop outcomes was presented by Prof. Ian Williamson, Chair of WG3.
In addition, two invited presentations were given in the morning plenary session. One was given by Mr. Minami Hidekazu, representative of ISCGM on Data modeling of Global Map. The other was presented by Ms. Jeanne Foust, representative from ESRI on Implementing Spatial Data Infrastructure: GIS Portals.
